Safety

1. I read..... "Leave it alone" by Brother H. Burke Peterson.
I watched.... Faux Paw (fun cartoon about a cat discovering the dangers of the internet), Katie's Story (a story about a girl who began a relationship with an older man over the internet), Cyberbulling (describes and gives stories of cyberbulling), Public Service Announcement (talks about use of cellphones and photos over the internet and has a segment with a panel of experts that answer questions), Podcasts (experts talk and discuss various technologies and how to better safeguard out computers) and iSafe (allows adults to learn about and review materials about internet safety and even receive a certificate in internet safety).

2. I loved reading Elder Bednar's talk. As I read, I felt such a strong realization of how important it is to protect ourselves and children from corrupting our mind, body, and spirit from inappropriate things. His talk spoke of how easy it is to access things through technology that is not right for our eternal goals and progression. As I read, I thought of how I need to be aware of these issues and make sure I do all I can to protect my future students and children. It is important to teach children about these dangers and express how these are not appropriate ways to use technology. It is important to teach the children to not be afraid to speak out about these dangers and to not be afraid to tell an adult when they come across possibly dangers websites or other sources of technology. I think that by keeping a relationship that will allow open communication while help foster the use of technology in uplifting and righteous ways. It is very apparent that Satan has made it so easy for children to access almost anything on the internet and other modes of technology. By being aware of these dangers, we can better help care and shelter our children from falling into these traps. I think it will be best to have conversations about safely and teach them skills when using the internet. It will also be best to block specific sites, keep track of email and social networking passwords, etc.

3. I decided to talk to a young mother in my grandparent's ward who I had babysat for a few times. I had noticed her oldest was an active user of technology and I thought it would be interesting to meet and talk about what she knows. Growing up with computers, she was pretty well informed about how to block inappropriate sites and how to place passwords on their computer. She explained she and her husband had decided to make a code of use for their family's use of technology. She explained it looked close to a family proclamation and their promises to use their resources in a healthy way. I thought this was a fabulous idea. I thought it might be good to show her some of the videos I viewed. She really liked the production by BYU with Fuax Paw and thought she might show her son the video so that he can be more aware of the dangers when using the internet. I also showed her some of the other resources and videos which she thought were so interesting. It was fun to talk about the one mother shown in a video where she wanted to control all of her children's passwords and activity. She liked the idea of doing a contract with her children instead because it makes them responsible for their actions and they will be fully aware of consequences for using them the wrong way. She strongly believes in explaining why we use things a particular way. It was a great conversation and I felt like we both learned a lot from other another.

Week 10

Watching the three video clips, one thing that stood out to me was how you can use the same technology in multiple ways to aid to the individual levels and needs of students. Reading over the lesson plans of the teachers, they all noted that students were able to experiment and utilizing the technology to their levels. Some students discovered different stamps and options on Kid Pix while some just use what they already knew. This was interesting to me because I am constantly thinking of how I can accommodate the different needs of my students. Knowing that I can use the same technology and use it in different ways is comforting. It highlighted to me that when I plan lessons and implement technology, I should pick technology that is versatile and can be altered to adhere to the needs and objectives of my lessons.

Technology Inventory

For this assignment, I chose to interview a private school teacher I worked with over the summer in Foster City, California. I have been considering working in a private school and was interested in the kinds of technologies and resources available compared to public schools. Mrs. Barbie is a 2nd grade teacher with 18 students in her classroom. I asked her to make a list of the all the technology resources she had and used in her classroom. She explained they had 9 computers, 4 digital camera, a projector, a projector screen, a smart board, calculators, access to a tv and vcr/dvd player, a radio, cd, tape player, and numerous educative computer games.
Miss Barbie uses the computers daily and said her students love to use them to enhance their activities. Her students send e-mails to other students in different schools, allowing them to practice their typing and composition skills. She also has various games set up on the computers that allow students to practice spelling, math, and grammar. She said these games are typically for early finishers, but also offers them to students who arrive early each day. Although the smart board is fairly new to the classroom and she admits she has yet to figure out all it can do, she says it is a great interactive tool. She says the children are fascinated by it and love to look at geometric shapes using software. She explained it is a great way to introduce new ideas, especially in math and science, and actually demonstrate the task for her students. This way the children see it modeled before they are expected to perform the task themselves.
When I asked her what technology she wished she had in her classroom, she surprisingly said more books on tape. She said she has one tape player, but wished she had more tape players should could let students use to read more challenging books. She said even at 2nd grade, students enjoy being read to, even chapter books. She also expressed interest in movie making software. She said her students are very creative and she could see such resources enhancing their learning process. As I discussed information about technology and what I have learned in this class, I suggested features like Voice Thread and some of the movie making software we used in class. She was thrilled with the new possibilities for her classroom and hoped to implement them soon.
It was interesting to hear about all the great resources she has in her classroom and how she used them. I found it interesting, however, that the things she "wished" she had were simple tools found in many classrooms. It showed me that some expensive technology is great, but teachers can make use of basic technology to make fun, enriching, and contextual activities.

Voice Thread

I watched:
1. Caroline- location of the moon
2. Kate- changes and phases of the moon
3. Leslie- kidspiration and sink and float

I really enjoyed watching the various voice threads and getting to know all the options that are out there to help me integrate technology into my science curriculum. I really liked using Stellarium to show how the moon changes in location and has phases. It would be a great way for kids to learn how to make predictions, analyze date, and make graphs about what they have learned, allowing them to really go through the scientific process. I also liked kidspiration and how it added a whole new dimension to creating activities that kids can work hands on with during science lessons. I look forward to using some of these tools in my future classroom and implementing technology more fully in my science objectives! I think using technology will make the activities more rememberable and help make lessons more contextualized!

Week 7- Part One of Science Challenge

Content

As I was looking over the various science probes, I thought it would be a great way to incorporate technology a I teach my students about globes and maps and the community. I decided to focus on 2nd grade and utilize the 2nd grade science core standards 2 and 3. More specifically, I want to focus on these objectives:

Standard 2:
Objective 2: Examine important aspects of the community and culture that
strengthen relationships.
ii. Compare rural, suburban, and urban communities.
iii. Relate goods and services to resources within the community.

Standard 3:
Objective 4: Demonstrate how symbols and models are used to represent features of the
environment.
i. Identify and use information on a map or globe (i.e., map key or
legend, compass rose, physical features, continents, oceans)
ii. Use an atlas and globe to locate information
iii. Locate continents and oceans on a map or globe (i.e., North America,
Antarctica, Australia, Africa, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean).

Pedagogy
Through this activity, my students will practice and demonstrate the following:
- Observation- observing different buildings and how communities function
- Inquiry- where things are located on a map; why communities are set up in the way they
are; construct questions about the world and their community; pose inquiry about
the world around them and how it functions; pose questions about the
community; create new questions from existing questions and answers
- Predicting- creating predictions where things are located on maps and globes; which
direction do they think items/areas are; creaing hypothesis and testing them out
- Analysis- taking information gather and making conclusions, new questions, etc

Technology
I plan to use Google Earth for this assignment. I plan to use the 3D building layer, Street layer, and basic navigation (zoom in and out, compass, directions, etc) to help facilitate the discussion of maps and our communities.

For Standard 3, I could introduce children to flay maps and globes, explaining how maps help us navigate and know more about the world around us. We could discuss places they have been in the world and locate them on the map. I would introduce the compass and how they are used. I could explain how with technology, we have even more maps! I would show them Google Earth and explain these are made by satellites, so they are real images. We could make inferences about where oceans are, where they think other places are, and become familiar with navigation. The children would be encouraged to observe places that look familiar and to make guesses of what they are looking at (i.e. I could bring up and ocean and have them guess what the large blue mass is)

For Standard 2 (community awareness), I think it would be appropriate to bring up Provo and examine the community we live. The children could announce some of the places they know in the community. After we have visited these places, we could make inferences of why certain places are put together (homes, businesses, etc). We could also look at big cities and small farm towns, etc. We could make guesses of what might we find in each place and why. This would allow us to discuss how various communities function.

Virtual Tour

Here is my virtual tour assignment! I created a tour utilizing 4th grade science core curriculum, examining the differences between rocks and minerals, the types of rocks, erosion and weathering, and how soil is made. As students view my tour, they will become more familiar with this topic. To download the file, click here

The tours I viewed were:
1. Kate- ecosystems
2. Adrianne- Clocks
3. Caroline- Cultures Around the World

I really enjoyed this activity and thought it could be used in so many ways in my future classroom. Some of the upsides would be that it is a way of exposing children to he world without having to actually visit those places. By utilizing tours and Google earth, you could enrich your lessons. Instead of discussing the pyramids in Egypt, the kids could actually "go" there with good earth. This would also be a great resource if you were going to be out of town and a substitute would be with your class. You could plan ahead and preapre an activity that would ensure your students were still engaging in meaningful and productive activities.

A few downsides I could see with using Google earth is that it takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of planning to gather the materials, connect ideas to content standards, and create the tour. I could see some teachers getting so caught up in the production of the tour that the content and meaning towards the standards are lost. It becomes a fun activity instead of one that utilizes technology to enhance a topic and learning.

Google Earth Tour

Location Activity DescriptionGoogle Earth Content
1. Y Mountain
Have students watch the youtube video about the differences between rocks and minerals. Have various pictures of rocks and minerals on page. Direct students to decide which is a mineral and which is a rock using what they learned in the video. Record results in learning journal.

Video and images

2. Timpanogous Cave
Students will have a Bill Nye video that will re-look at the differences between rocks and minerals. They will be introduced to the 3 types of rocks. After viewing the movie, students will view pictures of rocks and record what types of rocks they are in their journals.

Video and images

3. Moab
Students will read information about erosion and weathering of rocks. After reading the information, students will watch a video about erosion and weathering. After viewing the material, students will be asked to answer the questions, "Where the arches in Moab caused by erosion or weathering?"

Text, images, and video.

4. Dixie National Forest
Students will read a text about soil. Students will discover that soil is composed of rocks and minerals. Students will watch a video and view images of various types of soil. When they are done, they will summarize what they have learned about rocks, minerals, and soil in their learning journal.

Video and images

Possible Sources:
1. Y Mountain

2. Timpanogous Cave

3. Moab

4th Grade Science Core
Standard 3
Students will understand the basic properties of rocks, the processes involved in the formation of soils, and the needs of plants provided by soil.

- I will be guiding the children to examine the differences between rocks and minerals
- They will be able to distinguish between the 3 types of rocks
- Learn about weathering and erosion
- Learn about soil and how it is composed of rocks
All will be illustrated through the surrounding areas in Utah. The children will be guided to Mt. Timpanogous, Moab, and other locations that exemplify different rocks, erosion, and soil.

For this assignment, I decided to focus on 4th grade science core. I thought a virtual tour would be a great way to show students around the landscape of Utah while introducing a new topic. Instead of having there merely read out of a text book, a virtual tour will allow them to visit local locations where they can see the topics discussed. Mt. Timpanogous, for example, has various rocks embedded in it. The children will see pictures of these rocks and then read about rocks and minerals. They will begin to understand that rocks and minerals are all around them. For some children, they need to see things visually. If some sudents have been to Moab or caves, they will be able to relate to the new content with previous information, which will hopefully help them better remember the content.

I also thought this would be a good resource for if I was out of the classroom and a substitute was there. This would be a great way to make sure I was guiding the students and they are continuing to have meaningful experience while I am not there.

Digital Storytelling

My video made with iMovie:

Movies I watched:
Leslie- Charolette's Web
Angela- Who Am I ABC's?
Caroline- A Tasty Alphabet
Megan- Messy Room
Celecta- Winnie the Pooh
Nina- It's Raining, It's Pouring

I really enjoyed the movie making process. Something that I think might be hard for my students, since I am doing ECE, is having them self guide this process. Teacher aid, parent volunteers, of myself will need to help small groups of students complete the project. The students can collaborate on what they want to do and whoever is helping them can help create the project, allowing the students to do voice commentary. I also think it might be difficult to upload the videos. I had a very hard time getting my uploaded and found it frustrating. So as my little students try to do this project, I can see why it might be easy to get frustrated.

Week 3- TPACK

After reading the material on TPACK, I understand it to be a way teachers can implement and use technology in their teaching methods to support content-specific goals. So, if a teacher, for example, were trying to teach about planting seeds and how a garden grows, they could should a video of a seed sprouting in an accelerated fashion. The teacher could also use an excel sheet with their students to track how tall the plant is each day, measuring the growth. They could then have the students use a word processing application to write about the plant growth process. These would be all ways the teacher could utilize technology to enhance their students' understanding of the topic, allowing the students to see it visually, mathematically, and linguistically.
I think it is a great idea to use technology as much as possible and appropriate in the classroom. As students are themselves using more technology, it allows them to expound on the knowledge being taught in a different ways, catering to different types of learners and learning styles.

Story Board

Here are scans of my ideas for the story. I have all the pictures saved in a folder on my computer, plus a document with all the documentation of where these pictures were found. I am using a poem entitled "Mr. Wig, Our Guinea Pig" by Stephanie Calmenson, which I have rented a book from the library so I can pay tribute to it's source. I plan on finding a clapping noise and some sort of subtle background music as well.

Week 2

When I first opened the agenda for this week's assignment, I was a little overwhelmed. I had no idea how to make a website or do some of the required tasks! When I started working through the directions, however, I began to feel more capable and saw how easy it was to follow the directions in order to make a functioning website. As I completed the assignment, my mind was filled with ideas of how I could implement a class website in my future classroom. The Google calendar would be an excellent way to keep students and parents informed on up-and-coming school events, projects, and homework assignments. I thought I could even post the week's homework online so that parents and students could always have access to it, ensuring success! Also, like done in the homework, I could add a page that had supplemental worksheets, videos, and guidelines for my students for their reports, homework, or class unit. There are endless possibilities!
I also think it would be great to have surveys that students could do after certain units or mid-term where they could tell me how they feel, what they need help with, etc. It would also be great for parents to be able to take the survey as well, so that I could hear their input as well (especially is they are unable to come by the classroom). I think the website would take additional work, but it would be well worth the extra invested time!

Technology Background

I remember my grandpa having an old Mac in his home where you had to place to floppy discs in separate drives. I didn't understand it, but we always had fun playing various games and creating word processor documents. My dad purchased out first computer in the home when I was in Kindergarten. He would have my brothers and I practice our typing skills on a typing program and purchased several educational and reference programs.

Throughout my school career, my teachers have always utilized technology in the classroom. During early elementary, my teachers used books on tape, music, and videos to aid their lessons. Starting in 3rd grade, my teachers used computer games like Oregon Trail to aid our learning. By 5th grade, we were expected to use word processing programs to create and complete class projects, helping us become familiar with other computer programs.

In middle school and high school, I was always interested in technology. I worked on our school's TV station for 3 years and learned how to create, film, and edit TV programs. Technology has always come easy to me and beneficial. I enjoy making presentations and using technology to enhance my learning of various topics.
